THOTC: Val’s new life takes an interesting turn

June 16, 2011

About three hours out of New Orleans, still mourning having to leave their beloved 1973 Plymouth Valiant behind, the team picked up a message from the leader of the 24 Hours of Lemons team captain who had taken her in with the promise he would give her a new life as a race car…

After giving Val a good looking over, and discovering the condition she’s in it wouldn’t be right to strip her down & take her to Lemons.

Our initial reaction to this statement was that she was bound for the crusher, and we started looking for a spot to pull a u-turn on I-10 so we could go rescue her. Fortuantely, we continuned reading the message before pulling a hard left turn at… er… 55 miles an hour.

So plans have changed. I’ve done a quick cleanup of post-Rally debris in the interior and trunk (I found the Hula Dancer) and plan on giving her a thorough cleanup some time this week. I’ve taken care of most of the fire extinguisher residue. The ordering of a new head gasket, head bolts, and related parts to re-do the parking lot repair in a controlled environment will be happening shortly.

Turns out the car was in much better shape than he thought. Add to that the revelation that Val has working air conditioning.  Add to *that* the fact his girlfriend’s first question about the car was, “Can I drive it to work?” rather than the “What the $%#@ were you thinking?!?!?!” he was expecting.

In short, Val’s new life may be a little more mundane but a lot more loved — a daily driver.  We have since heard that the girlfriend has a paint scheme she wants on the car… to make it her own.

Thanks for reading, and see you on the road!
